Local officials on Friday said that 43 percent of schools are still closed in southern Helmand province. According to provincial officials nearly 100,000 children are deprived of receiving education adding that insecurity is at fault. Local officials also stressed that schools in northern Helmand are being forcefully closed at a rapid rate.
Deputy Governor of Helmand, Masood Ahmad Bakhtawar, said that over the years progress was made, but was not sufficient enough to prevent schools from closing. "Children are deprived of education," Bakhtawar stressed. "I ask religious scholars and tribal elders to put in efforts to reopen schools in the province."
