The Belgian Air Force on Friday completed its pullout from Afghanistan, with its F16 aircraft returning to the Kleine-Brogel military base in Belgium after a six-year mission. Since 2008, Belgium deployed six F-16s in Kandahar with a permanent presence of 100 military personnel as part of the Guardian Falcon operation.
The Belgian units had 5,466 outings totaling 16,575 hours of flight, in support of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) under the command of NATO in Afghanistan. General Gerard Van Caelenberge, Chief of the General Staff of the Belgian Army, said that the Belgian airforce now only had a few people at the airport in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan for air traffic control.
