Inmate Jailed For Decade Escapes Prison in Kabul

16 December 2014
A prisoner who was jailed for 10 years over drug smuggling has escaped Pul-e-Charkhi jail, Afghanistan's largest detention facility in Kabul, officials said. The prison officials confirmed the jailbreak, saying five officers have been arrested in connection to the jailbreak, the prison officials said.
The officials added the breakout took place last week on Wednesday when the families of inmates had visited the jail; however, it is unclear so far how the inmate, Ziauddin, escaped the heavily fortified jail.
"The officials were unaware about the escape for 24 hours," deputy head of Pul-e-Charkhi, Gen. Noor Guli said. "Five high-rank officers were arrested in this connection are under police interrogation."
The 22-year-old, who mysteriously escaped the jail, is said to be from northern Baghlan province.
The inmate is said to have shortened his hair and shaved his beard before the breakout, according to reports which were rejected by prison officials.
